ViaTalk – Tell It Like It Is – by Paul Jenkins
ViaTalk, just like a few other big internet phone companies, is trying to change their image. They, like Vonage, have gotten rid of their yearly contracts and hidden cancellation fees. But, like many other big “all-in-ones” they are still trying to get you invested and keep you dependent. One of the biggest draws to ViaTalk is the price. They are pretty cheap, and they also offer a lot of features, like soft phone access and second line, which you usually have to pay for with other companies.
Why it Rocks
The price is not bad. Via Talk offers some of the cheaper plans. They offer month-to-month plans and they offer deals where you can get the first three months for about half price. There unlimited US and Canada calling plan is $16.95 a month. If you can’t be bothered doing too much work and don’t want to spend too much money this might be for you.
Unlike Vonage, ViaTalk actually lets you BYOD (bring your own device). This means that not only will you save on adapter shipping fees (for receiving and returning), but if you decide to change providers you’ll still have an adapter you can use.
ViaTalk also offers softphone access. This is included in their plans, you just have to get the software somewhere else. This means you can also use your phone on your computer.
Where It Strikes Out
Unfortunately, ViaTalk can’t be used on a smart phone. If you’re looking for a phone to use on the go, this isn’t for you. Personally, I think the more options you have the better – but that’s just me.
There have been complaints of extra fees without clear explanations. ViaTalk has tried to improve in this area – they have gotten rid of their cancellation fees and according to their website and a Live Chat agent they no longer charge for activation.
The Last Word
They are cheaper than Vonage and they do let you BYOD. They also offer softphone access. However, you can’t use it on your smartphone and unlike Vonage, you can’t talk to a live person on the phone 24/7. Their hours are everyday 9am/10am to 10pm.
My Straight-up Advice: ViaTalk could work for you if you’re looking for an easy setup, want to save a few bucks, and don’t want to lock in.
