Voip.com – Tell It Like It Is – by Paul JenkinsVOIP VoIP.com *

On October 1st, 2010 Voip.com merged with Phone Power, and now their terms of service are the same. Before this they were getting a bad rep online, but it looks like since the change in management their service has improved. They offer one and two year contracts just like Phone Power, and they also offer month-to-month deals. Of course it’s cheaper if you get a contract, but even so their prices are still average, because they don’t offer as many features as other providers, including Phone Power. On the whole, they are about a middle of the road service.

Why It Rocks

Voip.com allows you to BYOD so if you like to do things yourself, you’ll save some extra money on shipping & handling charges. If you use your own adapter you’ll also be able to use it again, if you change providers.

You can use Voip.com on your computer. A softphone is included in all the packages.

Voip.com allows you to set up multiple phones, so you can use it on your computer and at home at the same time. They also offer a second line for free.

Where It Strikes Out

You can’t use Voip.com on a smartphone, and I can’t see this changing since Phone Power (their parent company) offers an iPhone app.

Voip.com doesn’t offer faxing either, again another feature which is included for free with Phone Power.

You can only get US virtual numbers with Voip.com, so if you’re looking for an international area code, you’re out of luck.

The Last Word
Voip.com offers reasonable prices, but lacks some features offered for free by other companies, including their parent company Phone Power.

My Straight-Up Advice: Since Voip.com was bought out by Phone Power their service has improved. If you’re looking for an easy setup, and want the flexibility of using your internet phone at home and on your computer this could work. If however, you want to use your internet phone on your smart phone or require faxing you should check out their parent company Phone Power instead.
